Wellington city has won the rights to host the 16th Air New Zealand Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival in October and November 2006.

The tournament is the biggest rugby festival in the world. It is expected to attract over 200 rugby teams and 5,000 people from over 20 countries.

The Festival will run for eight days between 29 October and 6 November, 2006. The event will mean the return of the festival to New Zealand for the first time in 10 years. The tournament was last held in New Zealand in 1995, when 5,885 participants attended in Christchurch.

Golden Oldies in Wellington

Golden Oldies rugby is well supported in Wellington. A number of local club teams compete regularly - such as the Upper Hutt Yellow Bellies, Stokes Valley Gangsters, HOBM Hobnobs, Wainui Wags, Eastern Magpies, Tawa Toads and the Ngatitoa Jugglers. The festival will be event-managed by the Wellington Rugby Football Union, who will coordinate games at venues around Wellington and Lower Hutt.
